Loma Prieta Earthquake 1989
Loma Prieta earthquake took place on October 17, 1989 at 5:04PM (Pacific Standard Time) This earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1 though some people argue that it had a magnitude of 6.9. Sometimes his earthquake is known as the World Series earthquake because it happened during the 1989 World Series. This earthquake lasted for about fifteen seconds. It cause damaged as far as seventy miles away. About 6 billion dollars in damage. This was the largest earthquake to occur on the San Andreas Fault since the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. Scientists in the area of the Loma Prieta earthquake discovered digging trenches could help determine current danger in the faults. Now trenches have been dug along the San Andreas Fault and many others including the Rogers Creek Fault and the Hayward Faults.

Earthquakes and tsunamis- step one
Earthquake- a series of vibrations induced in the earth's crust by the abrupt rupture and rebound of rocks in which elastic strain has been slowly accumulating. Earthquakes happen when two separate pieces if earth slide against each other on the fault plane.
Geophysicist- some one that studies earthquakes, and earth using magnetic, electrical, and seismic methods.
Magnitude- how large or small the earthquake is.
Richter scale- the Richter scale is used to measure how large or small the earthquake is on a scale of one to ten.
Fault plane- the space that separates two pieces of earth.

Tsunami- an unusually large series of sea wave produced by a sea quake or undersea volcanic eruption
